The Getaway Island Apparel logo and its individual elements (images, colors, etc.) embody the brand's mission of celebrating various freedom fighters who were enslaved/oppressed in countries/regions that are popular vacation destinations and well-known for their natural beauty. Often times, visitors of countries/regions that fit the above description tend to forget about the dark acts of slavery and oppression that occurred in these beautiful places. It is our goal to bring light to these atrocities through the celebration of the heroes that overcame their negative conditions in these places through acts of courage and valor. Our goal is to take our customers on a "getaway" of sorts to the times and places in which the represented heroes lived. Our tagline, "An Escape to Reality" means just that. We seek to take you on an island getaway, during which you will escape to the very real moments in history in which our heroes earned their legendary statuses. Another common behavior of the members of modern society is the tendency to feel the need to temporarily "escape" FROM reality through playing video games, watching TV & movies, and reading comics/novels, often times as a means of temporarily placing oneself in the shoes of some sort of fictional hero or grandiose figure. Through our clothing, you can escape TO reality through learning about the stories and lives of real-life "superheroes" who accomplished great feats and achieved legendary status through their undying courage and steadfastness. These heroes often risked their very lives, recognizing that a life of slavery/oppression is no life at all. This brand in no way intends to promote/incite violence or defiance of and/or rebellion against official authority, but instead desires to recognize, immortalize, and celebrate those oft-forgotten historical figures and the stories of them and their respective people who were brave enough to take a stand against and resist wrongful enslavement & oppression. We seek to shed light on those individuals known as Freedom Fighters, who decided to reclaim their fates and take matters of liberation into their own hands in order to wrest their freedom and that of their respective people from the clutches of evil, no matter the cost. You will notice that our designs and representations of these figures are largely inspired by anime/comic book culture, but still seek to portray some degree of realism. This somewhat fictional depiction of our heroes is our own unique way of paying homage and celebrating them in a modern, relatable way. It also serves to illustrate that these individuals epitomize heroism and have some of the most fascinating life stories/experiences in history, despite the fact that they are often overlooked. The palm leaf on top of the “G” gladiator helmet represents the natural/tropical beauty of the various regions that are infamous for slavery/oppression (particularly the Caribbean & Latin America). Instead of a horsehair crest, which is typical of ancient Roman gladiator helmets and other similar combat helmets of antiquity, we decided to use a palm leaf to evoke images of the tropical lands in which slavery was a common institution, as well as those of Africa, from which these slaves often originated. The brown gladiator helmet symbolizes the freedom fighters around the world who were courageous enough to fight back like true warriors and resist bondage and oppression, despite the odds being heavily against them (e.g. the gladiators of Ancient Rome inciting the Servile Wars). This helmet is also in the form of the letter "G", which is the first letter of the brand's name. The jagged, wavy turquoise-colored water represents the Atlantic Ocean, which is the body of water that facilitated the Transatlantic Slave Trade, arguably the most notorious slave trade in history. The water also hearkens back to the overall tropical theme of the brand.
